0What is Veganuary?
Veganuary is a non-profit event that takes place each year in January. Since 2014, Veganuary has encouraged thousands of people to try a vegan diet for a month. During Veganuary, the challenge is to cut out all meat products from your diet, as well as all other animal byproducts such as eggs and dairy. The number of people signing up for Veganuary has increased exponentially each year, highlighting the UKs growing interest in the vegan diet. In 2015, 12,800 people signed up for Veganuary, whereas in 2022, 629,000 people signed up to go vegan for the month of January. Many celebrities such as Joaquin Phoenix, Paul Mccartney and Billie Eilish have endorsed the vegan diet as well as encouraging others to take part in Veganuary.
Why go vegan?

Health- On average, vegan diets have been found to provide more fibre and antioxidants than other diets. Certain studies have even found that vegan diets have been linked to lower rates of heart disease and type-2 diabetes.

Animal cruelty- By cutting out meat and other animal derived products from your diet and lifestyle, you avoid supporting the meat, egg and dairy industries. Vegans in the UK save approximately 8 cattle from death each in their lifetime.

Climate crisis- Each step of the production of animal food products generates significant levels of greenhouse gases. Cattle in particular are a huge source of greenhouse gas emissions, producing 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions globally. A study from Oxford University has suggested that switching to a vegan diet can reduce your carbon footprint by 73%.
Whilst many people go on to adopt a vegan lifestyle after Veganuary, there are many benefits to going vegan just for the month, like helping to reduce carbon emissions and simply just encouraging people to try new foods! Brands and restaurants have also been supporting Veganuary by releasing vegan foods. For instance, the iconic Greggs Vegan Sausage Roll was released in January 2019. Each year, more and more companies get involved in the vegan movement.
