0Happy Earth Day! Each year on the 22nd of April, Earth Day is held across the globe to promote the protection of our planet. The annual event was first held in 1970, after being proposed in 1969 at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco by John McConnell. The proposition came after a catastrophic oil spill by Union Oil that killed thousands of sea animals in 1969. In 2020, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day was celebrated.
Each year, a different topic relating to the environment is discussed. Examples of these topics range from climate action to end plastic pollution. The official theme for this year is ‘Invest in our planet’. The aim of this Earth Day is to encourage businesses, governments and individuals to invest in the future of the planet, by developing green economies and focusing on business ideas that are sustainable for people as well as the environment.
Earth Day is being celebrated worldwide by organisations and individuals this year in thousands of different ways, through festivals, exhibits and more! Did you know?: Earth Day wasn’t always known as ‘Earth Day’. Previously, Earth Day events were known as ‘Environmental Teach-Ins’. Other names were considered for the event, such as ‘Environment Day’, ‘E Day’, and ‘Ecology Day’.
