The History of Mother’s Day
Whilst we celebrate Mother’s Day in the UK during March, on the fourth Sunday during Lent, other countries celebrate the day or the similar Parents’ Day across the year. Early celebrations of motherhood date back to Ancient Greece, where Greeks would worship Rhea, the mother of the Olympian gods and goddesses. In the UK, Mother’s Day originates from Mothering Sunday, a practice originating from the middle ages during which people would return to the church at which they were baptised on the fourth Sunday during Lent. The modern Mother’s Day was founded in 1907 in the USA by Anna Jarvis, in order to honour her late mother who had passed away in 1905. Whilst initially rejected by the US Congress, by 1911 the holiday was observed by every US state.
