The national holiday was first celebrated in 2006 by animal rights advocate, Colleen Page. The holiday aims to bring awareness to animal cruelty and to encourage people to show appreciation for their pets. Many people also adopt pets on National Pet Day, to highlight the importance of supporting animal shelters and adopting (not shopping!) for pets.
