0Every 1st of November marks World Vegan Day, an international day of celebration for veganism and all things vegan. At EZ Hampers, we accommodate all dietary requirements, including veganism, so we’re celebrating World Vegan Day by highlighting all our fantastic 100% plant-based gift hampers!
What is veganism?
The Vegan Society defines veganism as: “”Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.” In simple terms, veganism is all about avoiding all animal suffering, in areas such as diet, personal products and clothing.
Similarly to vegetarians, vegans avoid consuming all meat products such as poultry, pork, beef, fish and insects. Vegans also avoid animal byproducts derived from the slaughter of animals (such as gelatine, rennet and fat derived from animals). However, vegans don’t consume eggs or dairy products often due to ethical issues surrounding their production. Many vegans also don’t consume honey or products produced by bees.
According to a 2021 YouGov survey, approximately 3% of the British population identifies as vegan. This number is on the incline, as more people in the UK become interested in veganism due to the health benefits of a vegan diet and concerns about the effect of livestock farming on the environment.
