0At Ez Hampers, we’re currently celebrating the 1st of October as World Vegetarian Day! For the past 26 years, I’ve been a passionate vegetarian. This is why we ensure that each and every one of our hampers is vegetarian, if not entirely plant-based and vegan!
What is vegetarianism?
Vegetarianism is the practice of abstaining from eating meat (such as poultry, pork, beef, fish and insects) and other animal byproducts derived from the slaughter of animals (such as gelatine, rennet and fat derived from animals). It may be adopted as a diet for many different reasons, such as ethics, religion, health, and economic reasons.
According to the Vegetarian Society, in 2012 there were approximately 1.2 million vegetarians living in the UK. Whilst there hasn’t been a study of similar size since on vegetarianism in the UK, interest in vegetarianism has significantly boomed in the last 10 years!
Fun fact: The Vegetarian Society in the UK was founded in 1847 (175 years ago!) to promote vegetarianism. The first ever public meeting for the group was held in Manchester!
