Honey, Hives & Bees
The hardworking and humble worker bee has been the symbol of Manchester since the Eighteenth Century. During the Industrial Revolution, Manchester was a hot spot for industrial work activity, thus the worker bee was elected as an emblem to represent the spirit of the city.
As a proud Mancunian company, we chose the bee as our brand logo to show our love for our city. This industrious insect also reflects our company values: a strong work ethic, community and unity. Worker bees are also all female, making it the perfect animal to represent a strong woman-owned business.
Why are bees important?
Bees of all shapes and sizes are immensely important to the planet, for a number of reasons. The bee is crucial to many businesses in the UK, such as the food, drink, beauty and medical industries. The BBC reported that if bees and other pollinating species were to die out, the UK economy would be estimated to lose up to £440m per year. As well as their economic value, bees are also essential to the environment. Their ability to pollinate plants provides food and habitats for other wildlife. Approximately 90% of wild plants and 75% of crops commonly used across the globe require animal pollination.
Did you know?: When bees find a new food source such as flowers, they perform what is known as a ‘waggle dance’ to share this information with other bees!
How can we help the bees?
Despite their incredible importance to the ecosystem, bees are being threatened across the globe. Due to an increase in the use of pesticides and the destruction of habitats from farming, bee populations are in decline. As a result, 35 species of bees in the UK are now at risk of extinction. In order to help the bees, we have some top tips to help preserve our favourite insect:
- Choose bee-friendly plants in your garden. Local plants such as lavender and foxglove make great habitats and food sources for bees.
- Avoid using pesticides and herbicides. Many pesticides are harmful to bees, causing issues with their ability to navigate and their ability to reproduce.
- Support local beekeepers. Buying honey and beeswax products from local or sustainable beekeepers ensures that carbon emissions are kept low.
- Provide water sources for bees. Providing bees with a small water source will ensure that they stay hydrated! Make sure the water is shallow enough with rocks for the bees to climb out.
- Buy a bee hotel. Wooden bee hotels provide accommodation for bees such as solitary bees, allowing them to nest in safety.
- Educate other people on the importance of bees. Spreading the good word about bees will make others aware of just how much bees do for our planet.
